Louisiana Iris

…at least, I think, that’s what this is. It’s definitely some sort of iris, though it’s so incredibly exotic it almost looks more like an orchid. It has thin leaves several feet long and these amazingly sweet little blooms no bigger than about three inches across. They’re just stunning. They’ve been blooming for nearly a couple of months now, and I’m so afraid they’re on the brink of being done for the season. No real worry, as some other exotic blooms will be poking their lovely heads out soon after. There’s always lots of blooming glory in this town, any and all months of the year. This makes it a wonderful place to live. There are benefits to living in the semitropics.

The Louisiana Iris is the state’s official state wildflower. The colloquial name originated with the naturalist and artist John James Audubon. In the 1820s, while living in Louisiana, Audubon painted a pair of Parula Warblers. In the background he included some local flora, this iris, and dubbed its name. Or so the story goes.
